Sustainable Baddie’s March Staff Faves: How to Do Nothing, Lip Rings, & More!
Happy spring, baddies! Though allergy season is replacing the winter sniffles, we can officially say the warmer season is upon us ❤️ March has been filled with some of the most insane astrological events (stay tuned for more on this in an upcoming article), but it’s also brought us a few newly-featured Sustainable Baddies, like Radhika Gupta and Hila the Earth, and some sustainable spring cleaning inspo. As March comes to a close, we’re celebrating positive moments in the sustainability movement, seeing how our SB community continues to grow, and reflecting on our personal faves from this month.
From lip rings and free online classes to book and podcast recs, the SB team has been indulging in their vast range of interests this month. Read below to see what we’ve been loving this March!
Slow Factory - “The Slow Factory Institute just started their Open Edu Spring semester series and I am obsessed. Open Edu is a free and accessible education platform ‘that centers the voices and perspectives of People of the Global Majority’ on climate justice, human rights, and collective liberation. I’ve attended two classes so far — already learning so much from very insightful lecturers who have a wide range of experiences in different industries. It’s informative, eye-opening, and healing all at once.”
Colorful Tights - “One of my most significant fashion inspirations are the 60s mod and space age era — a time where Mary Quant hemlines paired so well with funky and colorful tights. I see the comeback now, and I can’t get enough of it. I have been having fun pairing a monochromatic skirt, tight, and shoe combo, as well as contrasting lace blue tights with greens, reds, and browns.”
Meyer Lemon Honey from Acid League - “I have been absolutely downing this vinegar from Acid League this month. Recently, on a self-care grocery run (a trip to the grocery store where I let myself purchase the prettiest and yummiest things, and try my best not to look at the price tag, for therapeutic reasons), I decided to treat myself to a bottle and it was the best decision I’ve made in a while. It is the perfect addition to any salad dressing, and I love it so much I just pour it in my honey lemon water in the morning for a little bit of pizzazz (and for gut health?)”
Hey Cowboy’s Album: The Soft Kind - “I have always been a Hey Cowboy! fan, but recently I rediscovered this album from 2018 and I just simply can’t stop listening. I stumbled upon the second track, Gaby’s Noodles, and was moved again by how unique the music sounds to me, and how it juxtaposes with the spoken French lyrics that seem to just kind of float in the background. Ugh. So good.”
My Lip Ring (lol): “Surprise, Mom! I pierced my lip this month, and although it was a bit impulsive I feel like a real badass and I am really embracing it. I am still playing around with piercing styles, but having something so edgy right on my face feels so exciting and it is giving me a lot to play around with, especially with my everyday style. I am starting to get creative with what kinds of looks I can create that include my new face accessory.”
How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy by Jenny Odell - “Let me preface this by saying, I’ve only read the first two chapters so far, but WOW. I’m truly loving this book and it’s already transforming how I approach life. Someone gifted me this book a few years ago, but I was hesitant to read it for fear that it would fuel the guilt I already have for feeling like I’m so addicted to my phone and having to constantly be stimulated. However, she gives great insight into how we got to this point, how doing ‘nothing’ actually involves something, and plenty of real-life anecdotes to drive her point. Her non-judgmental approach is refreshing and encourages me to live a more healthy, holistic lifestyle.”
My Thrifted T-shirt: “I recently thrifted bright green shirts with white bold words that say “Estoy Con Estupido”. I joked online that it says ‘I’m with my besties’, but I think most can deduce that ‘estupido’ translates to ‘stupid’, and it’s just a fun silly shirt to wear around town that brings a slight smile and sometimes a chuckle to people who notice it, which honestly brings me so much joy.”
HVML by Hepzibah Lyon bags: “Ok I don’t actually own one of these (yet!) but I’m OBSESSED with these purses made with 100% recycled materials. I love how playful and whimsical the brand is and how they showcase that sustainability and functionality don’t have to be boring. Which, as you know, are some of the values we hold at Sustainable Baddie.”
Caleb Hammer’s YouTube Channel - “With tax season around the corner and after realizing how much I have to pay the IRS, I’ve been binge-watching Caleb Hammer’s Financial Audit videos. In these videos, Caleb interviews guests from a range of financial backgrounds and reviews their monthly spending habits. At the end of each video, he creates a budget for the guest and rates their current situation based on his metrics. Although Caleb has a tough-love approach to personal finance, his videos have really inspired me to refine my budget and stick to it 👏”
Hard Fork Podcast by The New York Times - “This podcast, by The New York Times, is hosted by journalists Kevin Roose and Casey Newton. In each episode, they review the biggest news that has happened in tech each week. From sharing their experiences with AI chatbots to talking about the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, Roose and Newton make what may seem like boring news exciting. If you’re into tech or want to learn more, I definitely recommend this podcast!”
