Sustainable Baddie Feature: Sally "callmeflowerchild"
Meet Sally, the creator behind the @callmeflowerchild Instagram page! Read ahead to learn about Sally’s experience working for a non-profit, her cycling goals, and her challenges as a sustainable content creator.
1. We love seeing how much time you spend outdoors! What is one of your favorite
outdoor activities? I love camping!! I wish I had the time to do it more. There’s nothing like waking up in the morning and opening your tent and seeing that beautiful sunrise with a cup of coffee by a morning campfire! Also, as of late I have really enjoyed getting into cycling. I feel so free when I ride my bike, I just love it! I’m a newbie so I’m still getting better but that’s part of the fun.
2. Tell us a bit about your job! What is it like working for a non-profit?
Apart from content creation I work as an Outreach Manager for the National Parks Conservation Association. I help connect underrepresented communities to public lands like our national parks and help build a group of amazing park advocates that reflect L.A and the nation’s diverse demographics.
In L.A we’re a small office, but I love being able to work with community groups that look like me or with other BIPOC communities. I didn’t get to experience my first national park until I was 23 and now, I am able to provide that opportunity for many others. I love the fun trips I get to do with the community groups I work with.
3. Do you have any cycling goals for the year? Have you reached them already?
I am soooo proud and happy that I was able to do a 50-mile bike ride! I would love to be able to achieve a century (100 mile ride) but I don’t think I’ll be able to do that this year but I am definitely working towards it!
4. What are some challenges you have as a content creator in the sustainability space?
Feeling like I always have to be on or that I always have to make content to stay relevant. Social media moves so fast and sometimes it feels like you can't just be in the moment because other will say “everything can be content” but it doesn’t have to be. I love taking breaks from social media and being in the now. I just wish the algorithm didn’t punish us for taking care of mental health.
5. Do you have any big milestones or exciting news coming up?
The only thing I really wanted to achieve this year was to move out on my own and I am very happy to say I was able to achieve that in the early part of the year. It’s a big milestone for me. Other than that, I just want to focus on my physical and mental health this year. I don’t want to pressure myself to achieve this long list of things. Just living and enjoying life with my family and friends is all I want.
