7. Oîma

 
 

Founded by Paraguayan-American Marilyn Sanchez, Oîma is an NJ-based brand that specializes in botanical dyeing and bookbinding. The word “oîma” comes from Guaraní, the second official language of Paraguay, and can roughly “translate to mean when something is ‘ready,’ but is often used as a way to exit a conversation. Oîma elicits a movement forward, perhaps even a mindset for creation, priming the stage for imagination and play.”

19-year-old Xiye Bastida is a Mexican climate justice activist and co-founder of the Re-Earth Initiative from the Otomi-Toltec Indigenous community located in Central Mexico. Her environmental activism began in 2015 after moving to NYC. Having spoken at the UN Climate Change conference and at organized strikes of over 300,000 people, Bastida works to make the climate movement a more inclusive and diverse space.

After noticing the lack of access to food experienced by many people on and off campus, Amy Quichiz decided to shift Veggie Mijas to a collective where people can share recipes and find community amongst other vegans of color.

Selva Negra is a Latina-Filipina owned fashion label that was founded in Brooklyn in 2016 by Kristen Gonzalez. Their pieces are made in Los Angeles, and the brand prioritizes sustainably sourced materials, production transparency, compostable packaging, upcycled fabrics, and small batch production.
